It started as a peaceful thank-you from The Rolling Stones to their fans, but became the event that brought the sixties to a tragic close. Just four months after Woodstock, over 300,000 members of the Love Generation gathered outside San Francisco, at the aging Altamont Speedway to see the Stones, The Jefferson Airplane, and others. Also there to help with crowd control and security were members of the outlaw biker gang The Hell's Angels. Instead of order, an atmosphere of fear and anger overtook the crowd as confrontations with The Hell's Angels increased and escalated. Documentary pioneers, David and Albert Maysles, and Charlotte Zwerin immortalized on film the near riot where one cold-blooded slash transformed a decade's dreams into disillusionment.
